How to Make a Bouquet

Many people ask me how I decide what to put in my market bouquets. Well……

I follow a formula or recipe to build this work of art, and I’m going to tell you all about it right here.

A bouquet is made up of 3 basic elements and then 2 special considerations as well.

The Three Basic Elements

  1. Focal Flowers: You want to have 1-3 large focal flowers. These are the ones that steal the show, they are big, bold and demand your attention. A few examples would be sunflowers, peony’s, dahlias, zinnias, and lilies.

    2. Filler Flowers: These sweet gems fill out the space and add texture and openness without stealing the show. Some examples include:

    -Yarrow
    -Sweet William

    -Ageratum (my favorite)

    -small Zinnias

    -Dara (chocolate/false Queen Anne’s Lace)

-spike flowers like Larkspur and Snapdragons

    . . . just to name a few.

3. Foliage: This is the greenery and what pulls the bouquet together and makes it shine…. in my opinion anyway. You want about 1/3 of your bouquet to be foliage. These flowers would include:

-Bells of Ireland

-Bupleurum

-Mint

-Basil

-Grasses

-Millet

. . . . . and so much more.

Then you want a few special elements in a bouquet as well.

I try to always include something that smells nice. Most cut flowers do not have a scent. So I grow a few things that I add just because they smell so good. These fall into the other categories of flowers, so they overlap. Examples of flowers that smell good are:

-stock

-mint

-basil

The second special consideration is you want to add a little sparkle to the bouquet. Something that will spill out and give a little fireworks. A few examples include:

-Dill

-Queen Anne’s Lace

-Grasses

-Amaranth

From there you assemble all the elements together and then:

Beauty, delight, and joy fill whatever space you display your bouquet.

I hope this gives an idea on how to make a market bouquet. In future blog posts I will go in depth into each of these elements. But for now this will give you a taste of how each bouquet is a labor of love.
